Down the Road, a Piece is a 63,000-word coming of age story. The protagonist, a thirteen-year-old black American teenager, lives in a racially diverse community in San Diego, California. In 1957, he travels with his family through the Deep South to visit relatives he’s never met. Unprepared for his confrontations with Jim Crow injustices in action, he starts out believing the world spins in the same direction as at home. What begins as a simple cross-country road trip becomes a voyage of self-discovery. His journey hits a turning point after the Ku Klux Klan threatens his dad’s life. It rattles the protagonist’s relationship with his father.
